Santa Fe, NM— The Matthews Gallery on Canyon Road exhibits artwork by established contemporary artists, but you’ll also see names like Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Paul Gauguin on its roster. Late last year, gallery owners Linda and Lawrence Matthews hatched a plan to reach out to collectors far beyond Santa Fe. From July 25 to 29 the gallery will host an online art auction featuring Renoir, Gauguin, Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro, and art connoisseurs across the country are taking note.
“Some of the works we’re putting on the block are incredibly rare,” says Lawrence Matthews. “We had a hunch that collectors outside our market would want the opportunity to see them.”
Works in the auction include two woodblock prints from Gauguin’s Noa Noa series, a Miro lithograph titled “Dog Barking at the Moon” and an etching by Renoir called “Odalisque”. A rare third state etching by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec titled “La Passagere du 54” will also be up for sale.
Historic Santa Fe and Taos art colony artists are well-represented in the auction. Landscape paintings by Emil Bisttram, etchings by Gene Kloss and a pastel by Alfred Morang will be on the block.
A number of works by contemporary artists will also appear, including abstracted figurative paintings by Jamie Chase, mixed media works by Kate Rivers and bronze and glass sculptures by Frank Morbillo.
Collectors will have the opportunity to register for bidding here starting July 25. For more information, please contact Jordan Eddy at firstname.lastname@example.org.
